The Detroit Zoological Park officially opened to the public, eighty-four years ago today, on August 1st, 1928.
Pictured: Jo Mendi, the Detroit Zoo’s first chimpanzee, signing a check. Circa 1933.
Bittersweet post today, as I loved going to the zoo as a child but after reading the Chimp Trainer’s Daughter’s blog post about treatment of chimps at the Detroit Zoo, I feel a bit down. A must read for animal lovers.
